Executed
Tony Chebatoris
Anthony "Tony" Chebatoris was put to death by the federal government by hanging on July 8, 1938, in Michigan, which a ClickOnDetroit report describes as the last execution carried out in the state. Governor Frank Murphy asked President Franklin Roosevelt to move the execution to another state, but Roosevelt concluded that little could be done to prevent it. According to one account, Chebatoris refused a customary last meal and turned away the prison chaplain before he died, and he was pronounced dead at 5:21 that morning.
