Where people have died in custody, place by place: the prisons, jails and detention centers with the most deaths recorded here. Select a facility to see everyone recorded as dying there.

These are deaths recorded here, from news reports and official lists, which cover some states far more fully than others, so counts and rates compare best within a state. The rate is deaths per 1,000 beds per year, using each facility’s current capacity from the national facility list, so a rate over earlier years is approximate; it is shown where a facility has at least 10 recorded deaths in the years chosen.
