Robert Lewis

Orange County, New York

Robert Lewis, a Black man, was held at the jail in Port Jervis, New York, when a mob took him from the jail and hanged him from a tree. The World, in an editorial published June 6, 1892, condemned the killing as a failure of the rule of law and noted that the courts in Orange County were operating. The editorial treats the lynching as a breakdown of legal process rather than a matter of individual blame.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The World editorial says a mob took Robert Lewis from the Port Jervis jail and hanged him.

Reported by: The World editorial.
