Robert Berg
Robert Berg was held at the Tombs in New York when a gunfight broke out in the prison yard on November 3, 1926. Police and guards fired on the group from the prison walls, the roof, windows and nearby office buildings. Spectators said Berg lifted a gun to his head and fired after a first attempt apparently misfired. Another man held at the Tombs also died in the fight, and authorities had feared an outbreak in New York's prisons for weeks beforehand.
