Jesse Jerome Dean, Jr.
Jesse Dean, 58, died on February 5, 2021, while held in immigration detention at the Calhoun County Jail in Battle Creek, Michigan. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lists the cause of death as a gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to a duodenal ulcer, and the agency classifies the death as natural. A 2024 report by Physicians for Human Rights, based on an independent medical expert's review of ICE records, says his bleeding went undiagnosed. The report says he had been unable to eat, had lost weight quickly and had severe nausea, but was not referred to a physician, and that staff did not adequately check on him the night before he died.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). ICE said he died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage from a duodenal ulcer, but the Deadly Failures report, based on an independent medical expert's review of ICE records, says his bleeding went undiagnosed, staff did not refer him to a physician, and they did not adequately check on him the night before he died.
Reported by: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (the agency that held him); Deadly Failures report (advocates).
