Dwight Maddox

33 years old · died July 15, 2008 · Wende Correctional Facility, Erie County, New York

Dwight Maddox, 33, had Type 1 diabetes since age 15 and needed insulin three times a day, his family says. Weeks before he died, he had been hospitalized after a diabetic coma and recovered. He died in the infirmary at Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, New York, late on a Tuesday night in July 2008. His sister, Celeste Lacy, says he began having trouble breathing and had a seizure in his cell, and that his family is asking whether a delay in getting an outside fire and rescue crew to the infirmary contributed to his death, and whether his insulin had been stopped by his prison doctor shortly before he died.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). His sister, Celeste Lacy, says he had trouble breathing and a seizure in his cell, says his prison doctor stopped his insulin shortly before he died, and questions whether a delay in getting an outside fire and rescue crew to the infirmary played a role.

Reported by: Celeste Lacy, his sister (family or their lawyers).
