Christopher Nieves, 46, died in a holding cell at the Kings County Criminal Court in downtown Brooklyn on Friday, August 29, 2025. The NYPD Force Investigation Division is also looking into the case. His family's lawyers, in a notice of claim, allege he needed urgent medical care, was discharged from Woodhull Hospital before being returned to custody, and was left alone for hours despite repeatedly asking for help. The city's Law Department and the NYPD declined to comment on those allegations, and his sister, Candice Nieves, said she cries every day thinking about what he went through.
