Zeke Chandler
Zeke Chandler, a Black man, was held in the Lake City county jail in Columbia County, Florida. Early on Sunday, May 21, 1911, a group of more than a dozen men posing as officers came to the jail with a bogus telegram, and the sheriff's 16-year-old son, left in charge while the sheriff was away, released Zeke and five other men to them. The mob drove the men about a mile outside town and killed them. One account says they were made to stand side by side and shot with rifles and pistols; another says they were tied to trees and fired on.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob posing as officers took Zeke Chandler from the Lake City jail on a bogus telegram shown to the sheriff's 16-year-old son, then shot him with other prisoners about a mile outside town.
Reported by: Lake City county jail (the agency that held him); Lake City dispatch in the Norwich Bulletin (reporters); news dispatch from Lake City, Fla., dated May 23, 1911 (reporters); Mountain Home Maverick report (reporters).
