Zechariah Squires
Zechariah Squires was an Army veteran and the father of a young daughter, and his daughter's mother described him as a human, a soldier, a son and a father. He died on February 2, 2025, at Coxsackie Correctional Facility in Greene County, New York, where he was held in state custody. Prison records say he was found hanging in his isolation cell, and the New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation lists the death as a suicide. His family says he had well-documented mental health and substance use issues and a suicide attempt in 2021, and they question why he was placed in isolation given that history. The Greene County Medical Examiner's Office was to determine the official cause of death.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The Attorney General's Office lists it as a suicide, prison records say he was found hanging in his isolation cell, and his family says he had a documented mental health history and a 2021 suicide attempt and questions why prison staff placed him in isolation.
Reported by: New York State Office of the Attorney General, Office of Special Investigation (outside investigators); Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) prison records (the agency that held him); his family.
