Yvonne McBride

26 years old · died July 24, 2013 · Lowell Annex, Florida

Yvonne McBride was 26 years old, and her mother, Lydia McBride, a registered nurse, said she could not understand how a healthy young woman died of pneumonia. Yvonne entered the Lowell Correctional Institution for women in June 2013, and the Miami Herald reported that she was in good health when she arrived. She fell ill in July 2013, collapsed and vomited blood, and was taken to an outside hospital, where she died on July 24. An autopsy attributed her death to bronchopneumonia brought on by swine flu, and the Florida Department of Corrections recorded the manner of death as natural. A former forensic pathologist said she should have received hospital treatment sooner.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The autopsy attributed her death to bronchopneumonia brought on by swine flu, and a former forensic pathologist said she needed hospital treatment sooner, while the state called the death natural.

Reported by: Florida Department of Corrections (the agency that held her); autopsy; Florida Department of Corrections inspector general's office (outside investigators); former forensic pathologist.
