Younger Lewis

died February 26, 1896 · Wichita Falls jail, Wichita County, Texas

A man who gave his name as Younger Lewis, and said his parents lived at Noosha, Mo., was held in the Wichita Falls jail in Texas. According to the Pine Bluff Daily Graphic, a mob of 900 to 1,000 men took him from the jail on the night of February 26, 1896, and hanged him from a telephone pole. The Semi-Weekly Graphic gave a different date, February 19, and reported that a second man who also gave the name Younger Lewis was taken from the same jail and hanged from the same pole, with officers making no effort to stop the mob. The two accounts disagree on the date and on whether one man or two were killed.
