Died in jail or a lockup
Witherford Trying
Whiteford Treying was held at the Princeton jail in Princeton, West Virginia. On March 11, 1890, a mob took him from the jail and hanged him, according to the Iowa Plain Dealer, and the Griggs Courier reports that he was one of two men taken. A later report in the Lebanon Express says the mob shot two Black people held there, which conflicts with the hanging account. None of these accounts says how the mob got into the jail or whether jail staff resisted or handed the men over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Griggs Courier (reporters).
