Willie Whaley
Willie Whaley, 31, was a type 1 diabetic who depended on insulin. He was held at Georgia State Prison, and in December 2017, three days before he died, he went to the prison medical unit with nausea and vomiting. His mother, Rebecca Hill, said in a notice that he received insulin only on his first visit and the next day, and that he was never referred to a physician. She has said she intends to sue the state over his death. An autopsy identified diabetic ketoacidosis as the cause of death.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The autopsy found diabetic ketoacidosis; his mother says prison staff gave him insulin only on his first visit and the next day and never referred him to a physician despite his erratic behavior.
Reported by: autopsy; his mother.
