Willie Frank Burks, 45, died on March 18, 2020, while held at Detention Center – Central in the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said he was found unresponsive in his cell that Wednesday morning and was taken to Atrium Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Staff described him as 'jovial and vibrant' when he was last seen, and the sheriff said he spoke personally with Burks's family. The sheriff's office said there were no signs of foul play, and the State Bureau of Investigation and the medical examiner are working to determine the cause of death.
