Died in custody
Willie Faulkner
Willie Faulkner, a Black man about thirty-five years old, was being taken from Shreveport to Benton in February 1919 in the custody of a deputy sheriff and a Shreveport lieutenant. Near Willow Chute Station, about thirty-five to forty masked men in automobiles stopped the officers and took him from them, and he was handed over to the mob. His body was found hanging from a willow tree in a secluded spot near the river, four or five miles south of Benton, the following afternoon. The Bossier Banner report does not say whether the officers resisted or gave him up.
