William Rousan

57 years old · died April 23, 2014 · Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center, St. Francois County, Missouri

William Rousan was executed by lethal injection of pentobarbital at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri, early on April 23, 2014. Missouri Department of Corrections spokesman Mike O'Connell said he was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. During the day before the execution, he was visited by three siblings, a sibling's spouse, a ministerial volunteer and a friend, and in his final statement he spoke of his faith and of a new home in God's heavenly kingdom. His attorneys argued that secrecy around the state's compounded pentobarbital supply could cause him undue suffering, and that a substandard drug could cause pain. Governor Jay Nixon declined clemency, and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to delay the execution.
