Died in jail or a lockup
William Null
William Null was held in the Siskiyou County jail at Yreka, California, in August 1895. Several newspapers report that a mob took the keys from the jail's officers, broke into the jail with a sledgehammer, and took him from his cell. He asked to make a statement, but the crowd would not wait, and he was hanged beside Lawrence H. Johnson. Accounts differ on the date, most giving August 26, 1895, and one giving August 20. A coroner's jury was reported to have been summoned.
