Died in jail or a lockup
William Mussel
William Mussel was held in the jail at Eaton, Ohio, on the night of December 21, 1886, when a mob took him from the building and lynched him. The Daily Republican reported that the mob included some of the town's leading taxpayers, and the Delaware Gazette described the lynchers as among its heaviest taxpayers and boatmen. The Delaware Gazette account says a mob took him on a Tuesday night, and that account does not say whether the jail staff resisted, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
