Wm. Mulcahey was held at the Essex County lunatic asylum in New Jersey when, according to The Democratic Advocate, he was beaten to death with a heavy spittoon by a fellow patient on March 17, 1885. The newspaper reports the attacker's own stated reason for the killing.
