William Morris

30 years old · died May 3, 1903 · Adams Landing, Mississippi

William Morris was in the custody of deputy sheriffs in Mississippi in May 1903 when they were taking him toward town. The Savannah Morning News reported that about 200 armed farmers stopped the officers, forced the deputies to surrender the prisoners, and that a deputy had pleaded that the law be allowed to act. A mob hanged Morris from the Yazoo bridge at Hayne's Bluff near Vicksburg shortly before daylight on May 3, 1903. The Portland Daily Press report gives no account of any resistance by the officers, and the accounts do not agree on how much the deputies could have done to stop the crowd.
