William Keemer

died July 2, 1875 · Hancock County, Indiana

William Keemer, a Black man, was held in the jail at Greenfield, Indiana, after being moved there from Rushville for fear of violence. A news dispatch datelined Indianapolis says an armed mob, said to be from Hancock, Shelby and Rush counties, broke open the jail, took him out and hanged him in a stall at the fairgrounds. A later account gives the date as a Friday night in late June 1875 and says no arrests had been made. Neither account says whether officers resisted the mob or handed over the keys.
