Executed
William Hendricks
William Hendricks had a young brother, about ten years old, who came to the Lynchburg jail to say goodbye, clinging to his neck and crying. He was taken from the jail to a gallows behind the Methodist graveyard in Lynchburg, Virginia, where a crowd of nearly three thousand people had gathered. A minister read a statement on his behalf before the drop fell, and he was hanged, a judicial execution carried out by the state.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state
Reported by: September 1860 newspaper report reprinting an earlier Lynchburg paper (reporters).
