William Hamilton

died July 11, 1884 · Johnson County, Missouri

William Hamilton was hanged in Warrensburg, Missouri, on July 11, 1884, in a judicial execution carried out alongside his brother Charlie. The Sedalia Weekly Bazoo reports that the two men were taken by train from the Sedalia jail, with crowds at the depot and hotel and an armed escort accompanying them to the place of execution. The paper says he was restless the night before, but he dressed neatly and spent the early morning reading and talking with those around him. At breakfast he ate little and accepted his brother's offer of watermelon, saying he would have to forgive him. The coroner, Dr. V. V. Smith, recorded pulse readings for both men after the hanging.
