William Gross

William Gross spoke of his mother before his death, asking God to comfort her, and she was present and greatly distressed when he was taken from the jail. He prayed for forgiveness and prayed in German with a minister before the sheriff prepared the noose. He was carried from the jail by carriage to a gallows in the Falling Run bottom, where he was hanged in a public execution attended by a large crowd. Physicians who examined the body after about fifteen minutes said his neck was broken.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state

Reported by: attending physicians.
