William Elder Homan
William Elder Homan, 40, died in the Bibb County jail in February 2019. The Bibb Sheriff's Office said he hanged himself from a bed sheet in his cell. An internal affairs investigation found that deputies did not perform the hourly checks required on his cell block, and that check logs were falsified, leaving him unchecked for about six hours before he was found. Two deputies resigned, a nurse was fired for not following policy on checks of people in isolation, and the sheriff said the supervisors had failed to make sure the checks were done, though he said the checks may not have prevented the suicide.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). Bibb Sheriff's Office internal affairs found deputies did not perform the required hourly checks on his cell block, and their check logs were falsified; the sheriff said the checks may not have prevented the suicide.
