Died in jail or a lockup
William Barnes
William Barnes, a Black man, was held at the workhouse in Montezuma, Georgia, and had been taken to Oglethorpe and then returned there. In early November 1910, citizens heard pistol shots at night and later found his body hanging from a telegraph pole in the Flint River swamps, riddled with bullets. Newspapers of the time report that a mob took him from the workhouse and killed him. His death was a lynching from the custody of the Montezuma workhouse.
