William Appling Jr.
William Appling Jr., 46, was held at the Mobile County Metro Jail in Mobile, Alabama. He had been hurt in an assault before he was taken into custody and was treated in an emergency room before arriving at the jail, where medical staff continued to treat his injuries. On a Tuesday night in late July 2023 he was found alone and unresponsive in his cell. The sheriff said foul play was not suspected, and the cause of his death awaited an autopsy; he was the third person to die at the jail in about a month.
