William Andrews

20 years old · died June 9, 1897 · Somerset County Detention Center, Somerset County, Maryland

William Andrews, a young man of about twenty who had come to Princess Anne, Maryland, from North Carolina, was held in the Princess Anne jail and brought to the courthouse for a hearing on June 9, 1897. As Sheriff Nelson and a deputy were taking him back toward the jail after he was sentenced, a crowd overpowered the officers, beat and kicked him, and hanged him from a tree near the courthouse, then fired bullets into his body. The judge pleaded with the crowd to let the law take its course, and newspaper accounts say the sheriff and deputy were pushed aside and that the coroner later ordered the body cut down. Accounts differ on details, and no one was named as a participant in the newspapers reviewed.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob seized William Andrews from the sheriff and deputy outside the Princess Anne courthouse, beat him, and hanged him from a tree, and the newspaper accounts say the officers were overpowered.
