Died in jail or a lockup
Will McMullen
William McMullen, a Black man, was held in the county jail in Perry, Florida, awaiting trial. In the early hours of March 19, 1908, an armed mob surrounded the jail, took him out, carried him to a secluded spot on the edge of town, tied him to a stake and shot him many times. One account says the mob was made up of farmers from the surrounding country, and another says a second man, Richard Smith, was taken and killed with him. Reports differ on the name spelling, with some giving Will McMullen or Will McMillan.
