Died in jail or a lockup
Will Henderson
William Henderson, a Black man about 30 years old, was held in the village jail at Jackson, Missouri, in October 1895, after a posse captured him. A St. Louis dispatch reported that a mob stormed the jail, took him to a pasture at the edge of the village and hanged him from an elm tree on or about October 11. A later report in The Hope Pioneer said he was taken from the sheriff, and one account said a jailer or sheriff had given up the keys. Newspapers reporting the killing said few, if any, of those responsible were likely to be arrested.
