Wil Stanley

died August 2, 1915 · Bell County, Texas

Will Stanley was held in the jail at Temple, Texas, in 1915. The Licking Valley Courier reported that a crowd took him from the jail around midnight and burned him on the public square in front of hundreds of onlookers, including women and children. The Semi-Weekly Herald, reporting that a mob of thousands stormed the jail, said he was shot and wounded before being thrown onto the fire and that he met his death stoically. Neither account says whether jail officers resisted the crowd or handed him over. The two papers also give different dates for the killing, July 31 and August 2, 1915.
