Wash Ferren

died October 5, 1897 · Ouachita Parish, Louisiana

Wash Ferren, a Black man, was held in the jail at Monroe, Louisiana, in October 1897. Newspaper accounts say a crowd gathered in front of the jail from about 4 p.m. on October 2, and that a mob took him from the jail at about 6 p.m. and hanged him from a tree in front of the courthouse. One account says a deputy sheriff who had the jail keys handed them over and that the mob battered down the outer door. The Twice-A-Week Courier-Journal dates the killing to October 5, while other papers give October 2, so the accounts disagree on the date.
