Died in jail or a lockup
Warner
Warner was held in the jail at Cheboygan, Michigan, in June 1883. According to dispatches reprinted in several newspapers, a mob of about 500 men took him from the jail and hanged him, with most accounts dating his death to June 14. One account says they hanged him from the cross-ties of a railroad viaduct outside town. Accounts differ on the jailer: one says the mob overpowered the sheriff, while another says the jailer let himself be held while the crowd took the prisoner. The dispatches say Warner maintained his innocence to the end.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
