According to a December 1899 retrospective in the Lewiston Teller, Walters was taken from the Lewiston jail by a mob and hanged from a gateway arch on Snake River Avenue around 1872. The paper reports that some people said a skull kept in a local doctor's office was Walters's, while others dispute this. Walters's burial place is uncertain according to the same account.
