Walter Smith

jail at Cabot, Ark., Lonoke County, Arkansas

Walter Smith, who was Black, was held in the jail at Cabot, Arkansas, when a mob took them from the jail and lynched them, according to a June 1892 newspaper report. A May 1892 telegram printed in another paper said Walter Smith was taken from a jail by a mob and hanged, without naming the town. Neither account says whether jail officers resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed Walter Smith over. The two accounts may describe the same death, but they do not clearly confirm it.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched

Reported by: a telegram report printed in the paper.
