Died in prison

Walter Jordan

Pinal County, Arizona

Walter Jordan was held at a state prison in Florence, Arizona, when skin cancer that had spread to his brain was not treated in time. Dr. Todd Wilcox, who reviewed his medical files, said the cancer had progressed beyond what a dermatologist should have managed and that Jordan may have survived with timely care. Advocates say his care was part of a broader pattern of neglect in the prison's medical system. About a week before he died, Jordan wrote to the federal court that the delays had left him suffering.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). Dr. Todd Wilcox, who reviewed his medical files, says delayed treatment let the skin cancer spread to his brain and that Jordan may have survived with timely care, and advocates say his care was part of a pattern of neglect.

Reported by: Dr. Todd Wilcox.
