Died in jail or a lockup
Wallace Mitchell
Wallace Mitchell was held in the jail at Syracuse, Kansas, in June 1888. Newspaper accounts report that a crowd of about a hundred men gathered after dark and went to the jail around midnight. One account says the sheriff first refused to hand the prisoner over, but he was gone when the men returned for the keys, which were later found and used to open the doors. The men took Mitchell to a telegraph pole and hanged him.
