Wallace McNeil

died July 27, 1895 · Arkansas State Penitentiary, Pulaski County, Arkansas

Wallace McNeil, a Black man, died on July 27, 1895, while held at the penitentiary in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Emmons County Record reported that about 100 men were being taken from the penitentiary near the insane asylum under the guard of eight guards when five of them tried to escape and a fight broke out, and it said McNeil died in the fight. The Pioneer Express reported the same escape attempt but said a different man was fatally injured, and it described bloodhounds being used to pursue the escapees. The two accounts conflict over who died in the fight, and that conflict remains unresolved.
