Wakiesha Wilson

died March 27, 2016 · Metropolitan Detention Center Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California

Wakiesha Wilson was the daughter of Lisa Hines and the mother of a son, and her mother and son later filed wrongful death claims over her death. She died on March 27, 2016, in a cell at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, a jail run by the LAPD. The LA County Coroner's Office ruled her death a suicide, saying she fastened a cloth noose to a telephone mounted on the cell wall. Two years later the LAPD fired a detention officer over the response, and a 2025 report said her family did not learn of her death for more than three days, a gap that prompted a law requiring jails to notify families within 24 hours. The city settled the family's claims in December 2017, and her death drew repeated protests at LAPD headquarters.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The LA County Coroner's Office ruled it a suicide, and the city's wrongful death settlements with the family, as reported, point to a delayed response after she was found unresponsive, though the coroner's ruling itself does not allege neglect.

Reported by: LA County Coroner's Office (medical examiner or coroner).

Lawsuit: Her family sued the city of Los Angeles over her death, and the city settled their wrongful death claims for an amount not disclosed in the reporting.
