Wade Womack
Wade Womack, 78, died in July 2022 while held at the Canadian County Jail in Oklahoma. His son Mickey described him as a good person who loved his grandkids, and said the family was never called by the jail to be told of his death. The sheriff's office said staff found him unresponsive in his cell and took him to a hospital, where he died, and that it did not suspect foul play. His attorney says she asked a judge to move him to a medical facility after finding him in a wheelchair, unresponsive and in poor condition, but the request was denied and he was returned to the jail, where he died less than 24 hours later. The state medical examiner lists a natural cause, atherosclerotic hypertensive cardiovascular disease, and also reports blunt force trauma; the sheriff said such trauma does not necessarily mean someone beat him.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled a natural cardiovascular cause, but his attorney says she asked a judge to move him to a medical facility after finding him unresponsive in a wheelchair and the request was denied, and the sheriff says no jail foul play was suspected.
Reported by: Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Canadian County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his attorney.
