Died in jail or a lockup
W. S. Thompson
W. S. Thompson was being held in a jail in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in August 1894, according to telegraph reports printed in several newspapers. Those reports say a mob took him from the jail and killed him on August 22, though one gives the date as August 23. The Daily Public Ledger reported that masked men surrounded the jail, that the jailer surrendered him, and that the mob hanged him on the courthouse steps. That paper placed the jail in Lake View, Oregon, which conflicts with the other reports.
