W. H. Spain

died September 10, 1867 · Express Office, Wisconsin

William H. Spain was an attorney and former army captain. In September 1867, while the marshal was taking him toward the jail, a crowd seized him from an express office. According to the accounts, the crowd battered down the bolted doors, dragged him out and hanged him from a tree limb. The sheriff and marshal were pushed aside by the crowd.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A mob seized Spain from an express office while the marshal was taking him to jail, pushing aside the sheriff and marshal before hanging him from a tree; the accounts do not say the officers gave him up, and the marshal's and sheriff's roles are otherwise unclear.
