Vladimir Matyssik
Vladimir Matyssik, 65, had Alzheimer's disease for about ten years, and his daughter Kristina remembered him as her best friend, recalling his laughter and humor. He was released from the Santa Clara County Main Jail on the morning of November 6, 2015, and his friend Mike Pavlov, who had come to the jail to bring him home, was not able to take him. Over several hours he walked about eight miles before he stepped onto Interstate 880, where he was struck and killed by a car. His family has filed a claim against the county alleging negligent discharge, while the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said the release followed established procedures.
Cause of death, as reported: Died in an accident (neglect alleged). The sheriff's office says he was killed in a pedestrian accident after release, while his family's claim says the county negligently released him without his family or friend there to take him home.
Reported by: Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his family's claim against the county (family or their lawyers).
