Victoria Yvonne Marie Gray

18 years old · died September 2, 2014 · Brazoria County Detention Center, Brazoria County, Texas

Victoria Yvonne Marie Gray was 18 and lived with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to her father, John Gray, who was diagnosed at 13 and says he wants to know whether she had a fighting chance. She died on September 2, 2014, while held at the Brazoria County Jail in Angleton, Texas, where she was found hanging from a bookshelf in her isolation cell. A Texas Commission on Jail Standards investigation reported that jailers missed required 30-minute checks and that a judge was not told about her mental illness. Her father believes the jail failed her at every step, and he has filed a wrongful death suit against Brazoria County, while the sheriff's department declined comment citing pending litigation.
