Vicki Avila
Vicki Avila, 31, of La Habra, was the mother of two young daughters, and her mother Ana Marie Avila remembers her as a smart, athletic child who loved Shakespeare and poetry. Family says she struggled with alcoholism and depression, and on June 10, 2006 she called police hoping to get mental health help; she was then taken into custody and held at the Orange County Jail. She collapsed in the jail infirmary the following day and was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center. Her family says officials have not explained why she died, and the district attorney's investigation and a sealed autopsy are still pending.
