Van Canady
Van Canady, a young man about 22 years old, was held in the jail at Shelby, North Carolina, in early December 1888. According to a Raleigh dispatch printed in The Morning News, lynching had been openly talked of and an extra guard was posted at the jail, but about 200 masked, armed men overpowered the guard and broke open the jail door. The dispatch says the men took him from the jail early in the morning. A mob hanged him about a mile from Shelby.
