A Kiowa chief, one of three chiefs taken into custody near Fort Sill, was being taken to Texas under military guard when he died. According to the account printed at the time, he worked one hand free of his restraints and stabbed a sergeant of the guard with a knife he had seized. A soldier then shot and killed him. The account comes from the guard's side and is presented as the official version of the shooting.
