Sheriff Riddick and his posse were taking nine Black people from Cat Island to the Marianna jail in Lee County, Arkansas, when they were held in the officers' custody on the road. The Telegraph-Courier reports that an armed band of white men took the group from the officers after a struggle. The mob hanged them from a sycamore tree.
