This person was one of nine Black people in the custody of Sheriff Riddick and his posse, who were taking them from Cat Island to the Marianna jail in Lee County, Arkansas. The paper reported that an armed band of men seized the group from the officers after a struggle. The nine were then hanged from a sycamore tree.
