One of three Black men held by deputies in Shelbyville, Tennessee, after a preliminary hearing was killed in February 1912. As deputies began taking the men from the courtroom to the jail, a mob that had filled the courtroom shot them down in a volley of bullets. The mob then stormed the jail office and demanded to see the bodies. The sheriff sent word that all the men were killed at the first volley, but the mob doubted this, and the newspaper reported that the sheriff's force was outnumbered.
